For 25 years, Irwindale Speedway and Dragstrip stood as a cornerstone of motorsport culture, a track that hosted everything from NASCAR races to demolition derbies and, of course, the unforgettable Formula Drift events. Known to fans as the “House of Drift,” Irwindale announced it will be closing at the end of the 2024 season, marking the end of an era for fans and racers alike.

For me, Irwindale holds a special place. I only had the chance to photograph there once, at the FD Finals in 2018, but even in that single event, the magic of the place was unmistakable. I still remember capturing the raw energy of cars barreling down the course, tires screaming, as drivers pushed the limits on every run.

There’s a shot I took of that final tandem battle that embodies the spirit of Irwindale: two machines inches apart, locked in a cloud of tire smoke, both drivers fighting for the crown under the stadium lights.

The crowd roared with each drift, each near miss—a true celebration of skill, style, and bravery.

Looking back on those memories now, it feels bittersweet. Irwindale was more than just a track; it was a proving ground, a meeting place, and a piece of history for the sport. For every fan who packed into the stands and every driver who laid it all on the line, this place was home.

As Tim Huddleston, President of Irwindale Speedway, put it, “Irwindale has been more than just a track—it’s been a home and gathering place for racing enthusiasts worldwide.” And as a photographer, I feel privileged to have been there, to capture those moments, and to share in the magic that was Irwindale.

With the track’s future sealed, the question now is, where does Formula Drift go from here? Rumor has it that FD may have something exciting planned for Southern California in 2025.

Maybe it won’t replace Irwindale in our hearts, but I hope it will capture the same spirit that has defined this iconic track for so many years. Until then, goodbye, Irwindale. Thanks for the memories, House of Drift—you’ll be missed.
